If you're looking for a summer get-away that's not too far but still close enough that you don't spend all day getting there, try Coney Island.
Two weeks ago, we made the trip down, if for no other reason than the sake of history, and came back with great memories of our day ... not to mention the picture to the right.
Yes, that is me on the famed Cyclone, the historic wooden roller coaster across the street from Astroland. Built in 1927, the Cyclone is one of the wildest coasters I've ever ridden (at $6 a ride, it had better be!) and it's worth the trip down to Brooklyn itself.
The actual Astroland amusement park is going to close at summer's end, as part of a renovation project that should be completed in 2011.

Also, you've GOTTA eat a hot dog at the original Nathan's, which is right around the corner from Astroland and the Cyclone.

To get Coney Island, I've found taking the train is the easiest way: Take the Metro-North train from Poughkeepsie to Grand Central; from Grand Central, take either the D, F, N or Q subway line all the way out to Coney Island (it's about a 45-minute ride from Manhattan) and get off at the Stillwell station.

Some kids just never grow up!! But, I recall there was a time when Sean wouldn't even go on a merry-go-round. Was it THAT long ago?!? Hey, enjoy yourself young man; you only go this way but once so make hay while the "son" shines!

I personally think it's more fun watching the people ride the Cyclone from the comfort and saftey of the ground. Seeing all those people screaming their heads off cracks me up!! What can be more fun that that...and it's free! No need to pay $6, just find a nice spot on the sidewalk and watch the expressions on the riders faces, especially if they are in the front seat by themselves :-) Priceless and hysterical, what more could you want?
Sean, I know this blog was more of an homage to Coney Island, but, as a fellow coaster enthusiast, I implore you to go to 6 Flags in Jackson, NJ and ride "El Toro"....best ....coaster ....ever!
