OK, so if you've been reading the past few weeks, you know that my GF and I are going to see Taylor Hicks, the guy who won Season Five of "American Idol," at the Civic Center later this month.
Just like last month's Bo Bice show at The Chance, I got a chance to get tickets to this show and thought, "Hey, it could be fun!"
Honestly, I don't know much about "Tay" (though I do know that his fans call him "Tay!") and I just yesterday got his debut CD from the BMG Music Service. I've seen, though, what a loyal following he has, and how they've all told me that we're in for a great show!
Well ... I was talking about the show to John Barry, the Journal's music reporter and author of the "Sonic Storm" blog. We had an interesting conversation.
Now, John's a music expert — he writes about it for a living and goes to more shows in a month than I've gone to in probably my life — and let's just say he and I disagree on what my GF, I and the rest of the Civic Center crowd have in store for us, come August.
Who's right? Who's wrong?
Check out "Sonic Storm," take in John's point of view, decide and let us know ...

"Point/Counter-point": Taylor Hicks

So ok - John is commenting on Taylor's 2 minute cover on American Idol that was over a year ago. Has he bothered to listen to any of the songs on his album or been to a concert this spring? This is a totally different Taylot Hicks - he is doing some of his own stuff now - music he "chooses" to sing. It's a whole lot different than American Idol days when he was boxed into the music he HAD to choose from. He is selling out crowds in many venues and doesn't seem to be having any problems getting bookings. It's unfortunate that John has already made up his mind and is basing his opinion on American Idol only. Too bad he'll be missing out.
he's wrong, you're right. end of conversation. any music critic/writer that doesn't even bother to check out the guy he's reviewing is a lousy critic/writer.
Sorry, Barry's right.
Listen to "Tay," just listen to him.
John may have been to more shows than you or some other people and he may get paid to write about it but he is so out of touch with the whole music scene his opinion doesn't mean skwat! Does he realize that wdst makes fun of him when he's on the air?
Sean, please stop saying "my GF" all the time, it's getting way to much of a pain to skip your sentences with these thougts included. Just say "my friend or chick or my girl", but not this GF thing in caps all the time.
Hey, keep writing though, I like the more open and realistic fresh stories rather than most of Johns & some other Pj blogs...
I went to his concert in May. If you are expecting to see anything like what you saw on AI, you will be disappointed. However, if you are going to see a great band and a great show, and a singer who is going to give you everything he's got, then you will pleased. I didn't stop moving the whole time, and would definitely go again, when I get the chance!
